Sptember 2012 – Kalgoorlie to Broken Hill

Well 2nd attempt to reach the Eastern states after the hassles we had to fix in Perth.  As you saw in the last blog we got to Kalgoorlie and within an hour Tui had a job painting our friends (George & Vicky’s) house. We ended up staying 2 weeks and the day before we left we went to the Kalgoorlie races and also the Caravan & Motorhome Show, a good day!! Once again it was hard to leave not only will we miss our mates but Tui also got offered a couple of jobs. Do we go or do we stay?  As you can see by the title we decided to keep the dream alive and head east.

Kalgoorlie is a great RV friendly town with great dump points and a 24hr free camp at Centennial Park.  Just had to take a photo of the boys doing the dishes at George & Vicky’s.  We had a great time guys!  Thank you for your company and the work of course. Get that Bus finished and join us!!

As we had traveled the Nullaboor twice before we made the decision to do as may kms as we could each day so that we could enjoy the roads we haven’t traveled previously. Once we left Port Augusta we were on new roads and we called into some really quaint little towns.  Wirrulla & Wudinna.  At Wudinna the car park across the road has a power point.  Unfortunately we were there too early in the day and didn’t stay.

We drove through the Flinders ranges which was a real new experience driving through windy roads instead of long straight roads.  Check out the 35kms/hr, just like NZ roads!!

At Orroroo we checked out the giant red gum tree.

Peterborough, it was time to dump our tanks and refill with water.  Also stopped to have a spot of lunch!

We had decided to stop at Olary Hotel where you can stay behind the Pub for free if you have a beer.  Unfortunately we couldn’t stay there as they had drillers staying with all their gear so it was closed to the public.

Wow!  Another state!  Now moving into NSW!  A first for us!! Stayed at Cockburn just before the border.  Not the best camp site but hot showers! On the way out we timed it perfect for an oversize load.

It was then onto Broken Hill, a Silver Mining Town (no Janine I didn’t buy any silver!).  Loved this area and stayed 2 nights at the Racecourse.  Checked out Broken Hill the 1st day.

Spent a day at Silverton, a beautiful Historic Town, the 2nd day.

We had been told to eat at the Cafe as there was great food.  The Chef was an ex Station cook.  Off we set and low and behold the place was booked out as a coach was due.  Buggar!

Silverton is world renowned for the filming of well known movies.  Of course one of the most popular is “Mad Max 2”.  So we visited the museum.  Well worth it!

Silverton Goal and Museum is a worthwhile visit.  So much to see!! Also saw animals to go!  camels, donkeys, kangaroos, etc. etc.

I guess a lot of you are wondering why we didn’t opt to explore more of South Australia and  Victoria, well, Tui has been offered work in Queensland so hence we are taking the shortest route. We will then travel around the coast at a later date

Until next time ” Laugh more, live longer”

  1. Dearest Judy and Tui,
It was lovely reading your latest blog and I loved looking at your pictures. You have certainly seen some beautiful places over the last few weeks! The old towns look amazing! I’m very jealous. I hope one day that we can experience Australia like you both are! What a wonderful opportunity. Stay safe on the rest of your journey! Love to you both. Take good care xxxxxx
